Yep, '71 does it (best) for me too - everything but especially Bertha. I remember when 'Skull & Roses" came out in the UK - John Peel (who ?) had the timing for the start of the solo and after, giving the general intro, he said something like "Keep your ears peeled(?) at x mins, x secs - it don't get much better than that".
RIP JG, RIP JP, Long Live '71.

Bertha is actually an easier song to learn and perform than Me & My Uncle. Garcia ripped it up during the lead break in 1971 on his Strat!

A simple tune to begin a set with to gain ones musical footing (so to speak).

Simple is good.

I prefer simple to (unnecessarily) over-complicated.

Oh, for those who didn't know, John Peel was (in)famous 'progressive' (?) radio jock back here in the good old UK. Infamous/progressive as you could be on the BBC back in those days (well, he used to play 'The Dead' for starters). Apologies for being vague.

why do you say Bertha is easier than Me & My Uncle? Not that either one is especially difficult...M&MU is as straight forward as it gets, Bertha has tempo shifts...
